He claims that the
light-hearted anarchism that characterizes him goesback to his roots: in
1548 his home-town Zichem was one of the few city's totally destroyed by the
Spanish invader during the ninety-years war as the people of Zichem were
standing for freedom of religion . He doesn't bow for any authority ;is
therefore in constant conflict with the establishment: thrown out of seven
schools because of rebellion-a nightmare for his officers in the armed
forces-starts a social revolution in the bank where he worked for 8
months-burns his first feature-length movie BREAKFAST FOR TWO (1972) on the
steps of the Cannes film festival-palace after a fight with his distributor.
That anarchism and his innate aversion for the powers that be is to be found
in all his movies: MIRLITON (1978) is about schizophrenia, the tormented
individual as a toy in the hands of power-hungry psychologists - THE RETREAT
(1981) showing a loner in his fight against a fanatical village community, with
a symbolic cock-fighting scene - THE EARTHWOLF (1984) a would-be winner
thrown into self-destruction because of neo-fascistic assertiveness
training. In his futuristic classic THE AFTERMAN (1985) he shows an
unworldly loner in a community without law and order,an anarchistic-chaotic
universe where he will finally find rest after discovering true love.
Ultimately shocking and controversial is the way he uncovers the network
around the Belgian pedophile psychopath Dutroux in BLUE BELGIUM (1999) where
state nor church are left untouched. In AFTERMAN 2 (2005) he gives Europe a
warning,in a nonsensical,comical way about a nazi-fundamentalistic
dictatorship that could bring us back to the dark ages...
anno 2007-2008:
Rob Van Eyck works on the last episode
of the Afterman trilogy:
AFTERMAN 3, a spoof
on the fear of the establishment for the 'global warming'!
